One of my favorite quotes is by Woody Allen. He said, "Your character is more important than your reputation. Your character is who you are. Your reputation is who people think you are."
This is important to remember because often times, we are tempted to forsake our character for the sake of salvaging our reputation. Yet in our hearts we always know what the right path is, whether we follow it or choose not to.
Think of a coach that pushes his team harshly and earns the reputation of being a heartless coach. Though he may suffer from this stigma for a while, eventually as his team excels his character of being an extremely caring yet strict coach will shine through.
If we always base our actions on what will immediately grow our personal fan base, most likely we will quickly become the most popular friend amongst our social sphere yet most forgotten soul in the records of history.
